FAQ:

QUESTION:  Why is my motorcycle insurance so expensive?

ANSWER:

According to ICBC statistics, the majority of multi-vehicle crashes involving at least one motorcycle happen in urban areas, at lower speeds, “at intersections where the driver of the other vehicle violates a motorcyclist’s right of way”, on weekends during July and August, and during peak traffic periods.

Premiums for Third Party Liability for motorcycles are based on the number of cc's and the driver's Claims Rated Scale. For Collision and Comprehensive, the premiums also take into account the declared value of the bike (currrent market value).

The Third Party Liability coverage is expensive, not because of claims for damage to others, but because your Autoplan policy in British Columbia includes Accident Benefits. If you are involved in an accident, this helps pay medical costs and loss of wages regardless of who is at fault. Since many accidents involving a motorcycle result in serious injuries, payouts for Accident Benefits are often substantial.

Because of a motorcyclist's vulnerability on the road, bikes are often severely damaged in the event of an accident. Collision claims are often inflated because of the intrinsic value of the bike (e.g. high end Harley Davidson's) or because of the customization. Motorcycles are highly subject to theft and, because they can be easily stripped down, are less likely to be recovered.

JOKE OF THE WEEK:  A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley, when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike. The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can I ask you a question?"

The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I can open hearts, take valves out, fix 'em, put in new parts and when I finish, this will work just like a new one. So, if you and I are basically doing the same work, how come I get a pittance and you get the really big money?"

The surgeon paused, smiled and whispered to the mechanic..... "Try doing it with the engine running!"
